A perfect Ibiza summer self-care chillout day 11th August 2023

There’s an art to enjoying a full-on Ibiza summer. It’s about taking time for self-care in between all the unforgettable adventures. So you can have even more fun.

These are our suggestions for how to relax, refresh and revive your energy levels during a chilled island summer day.

Exercise early

Exercising is even more satisfying in a gorgeous location when you’re taking a break from your everyday routine. Even in the height of an Ibiza summer, mornings are always cool and there’s often a delicious light breeze. Especially if you’re close to the sea.

The best time to keep up with your fitness routine is before 8am. And there’s nothing better than a sunrise run on the beach or yoga or Pilates by the pool followed by an energising swim.

Eat melon

Ibiza produces huge, amazing melons — probably the best in the world. Packed with vitamins A and C and a good source of antioxidants, they’re perfect for delicious morning juices and really nice sundowner cocktails such as a watermelon daiquiri.

To make a watermelon daiquiri:

1- Throw a handful of ice into a blender together with white rum, watermelon liquor or spirit such as Spanish Verano Watermelon pink gin, lime juice and watermelon flesh. Blend until smooth.

2- Fill a hurricane or tall glass with ice. Pour in the daiquiri mix and garnish with a watermelon slice.

Use natural suntan lotion

We’re big fans of Sol de Ibiza. Started by an open water swimmer who moved here in 2015, Sol de Ibiza is possibly the world’s most ethical sunscreen ever.

Made only with natural, organic and cruelty-free ingredients, Sol de Ibiza uses only plastic-free, zero waste packaging. It’s also vegan and reef-safe.

Take a siesta

The word siesta supposedly comes from the Latin sexta or noon, when Romans would eat and nap. It’s been suggested that the siesta became a Spanish institution after the country’s Civil War in the 1930s.

Apart from coping with the fierce midday and afternoon heat, there’s a historical reason why the siesta became common. After the economic devastation caused by the war, Spaniards often had to work two jobs and needed a rest in between.

Taking a siesta has many benefits including improving alertness and digestion. But even if that wasn’t the case, there’s something deeply satisfying and a little decadent about napping in a hammock in the shade or in a cool bedroom after a long lunch.

Wake yourself up with a swim or a re-energising cold shower and you’re ready to dive into the rest of the day.

Time to dine

Many of us in Ibiza eat later than is usual in northern Europe. It’s often so hot earlier on that we don’t have much of an appetite.

If you eat later, it’s tempting to indulge in something rich and heavy like a paella. But Spanish people think you’re crazy if you eat rice at night. Many also don’t drink coffee in the evening.

Baked, salted wild sea bass with grilled seasonal vegetables is a perfect light summer evening meal. For a digestif, we recommend the authentic Hierbas Ibicencas from Bar Anita in San Carlos, the original hippy bar.

Hierbas Ibicencas is traditionally made from wild Ibizan herbs and anise-flavoured liqueur.

The hierbas from Bar Anita is reckoned by connoisseurs to be the best on the island. You can only buy it in the bar. It’s best to leave it for a year to let the flavours mature. So remember to take a bottle home with you if you’re here on holiday.

A day’s sailing

Alternatively, you could always charter a yacht for the day, head for Formentera, moor off a pristine white sandy beach and swim in cool crystal clear waters easily the equal of the Caribbean.

Or you could cruise the Ibiza coast and ask your captain to sail you to a gorgeous secret cove far far away from summer madness.

We would be delighted to arrange a yacht charter for you. Please get in touch with us.
