Can Palmyra and the luxury of year-round Ibiza family living2nd December 2022

The spacious salt-water pool at Palmyra

With its sleek lines, airiness and abundance of light and space, modern Ibiza mansion Can Palmyra embodies contemporary luxury living. But it’s also the perfect home for a family wishing to spend quality time on the island, for a month or so or permanently.

At 920 square metres, Can Palmyra is spacious indeed. The living spaces, including a mezzanine lounge area and supremely well-appointed kitchen, have high ceilings and glass doors that offer panoramic views of the garden, salt-water pool and pool area.

Four of Can Palmyra’s seven sumptuous bedrooms, and a staff bedroom, are located in the main house. All have en-suite bathrooms. One even has its own private indoor heated swimming pool and jacuzzi. Two guest bedrooms are situated in a chic casita nestling in the garden at the opposite end of the pool area from the main house.

Nestled in nature

The house has aircon throughout and underfloor heating as well as high-speed internet.

But the house itself is only part of the story. Can Palmyra is a private sanctuary, tucked away in a forest in the heart of the island, walking distance from the charmingly rustic yet surprisingly sophisticated village of Santa Gertrudis.

Highly regarded Morna International College, which has been educating children in a progressive, academic and creative environment for more than 40 years, is five minutes’ drive away and easily walkable.

Hala at Palmyra

The story of Can Palmyra

Before the present owners – interior designer and artist Hala Kürzl and her husband Richard – purchased Can Palmyra, it was owned by a well-known German designer.

Hala, Richard, and their son decided to leave Germany, where they were living, in 2013. “We left because we were tired of the weather,” she explains, “but also because the school system there is extremely strict. We wanted our son to be educated in a more relaxed way and feel freer ourselves.”

The search for a home in Ibiza began in Germany and continued on the island. After a month on Ibiza during which they fell in love with island life, Hala and Richard found their dream home, Can Palmyra.

“It was easier back then,” she says. “There were more houses than there was demand.”

From the moment Hala and her family walked into Can Palmyra, they immediately felt right at home.

“It’s a peaceful house. Despite the spaciousness and modernity, it’s full of harmony. We fell in love with the high ceilings and enormous windows that let in so much light. The huge master bedroom and the indoor pool were seductive. For our son, the large outdoor pool and tennis court were perfect. It also helped enormously that Morna International College was so close and he could walk to school.”

Palmyra is named after a Nassau estate referenced in the James Bond movies Thunderball and Never Say Never Again as well as an ancient Syrian city. The name was also inspired by the 45 palm trees in its grounds which, Hala says, gave the family the feeling they were permanently on holiday.

For Hala, an in-demand interior designer, Palmyra also offered the opportunity to express herself fully as a designer and painter..

“All the work was worth it,” she says. “It was fun, and we’re very happy with the end result. But now that our son is studying abroad, the house has become too big for just my husband and me. We’re also ready to do some travelling.”

Hala and her art at Palmyra

Inspiring art

Palmyra has been a constant source of inspiration for Hala’s art. To give just one example, she made a 3.5 x 4 metre painting that incorporated the symmetries and shape of the house.

“I stood in the garden while the house was being remodelled,” she explains, “and drew this huge picture. My paintings, drawings and collages have always been inspired by nature. This piece will be remaining in the house, where it fits so perfectly.”

Other paintings by Hala have long since departed the walls of Palmyra, purchased by friends and acquaintances who would visit and ask to buy the work right off the wall.

The luxuries of light, air and space

Can Palmyra: the Charles Marlow perspective

Can Palmyra is unique in that it’s clearly a luxury home but it’s also perfect for a family that wants to spend a few months in Ibiza or even live on the island year-round.

It’s luxurious, spacious and ultra-modern yet warm and cosy – a proper house rather than just a holiday home. Palmyra would definitely be a lovely place to spend the winter. And, as those of us who live in Ibiza year-round know, the weather in winter can be gorgeous.

You could hide yourself away at Can Palmyra and enjoy the seclusion, perhaps while you work from home. When you fancy connecting the outside world, you could head for Santa Gertrudis. If you have children, the idea that they could walk to Morna International College, a great school, is pretty appealing.

We’re getting more and more enquiries from people wanting to move away from the bigger cities and live year-round in places they might previously have only visited for a holiday and Can Palmyra is the perfect family home.
